Chair Pose
Build heat, strength, and determination with Chair Pose — a fierce standing posture that fires up the legs and core.
Chair Pose, or Utkatasana in Sanskrit (literally "fierce pose"), is a powerful standing posture that builds heat and strength throughout the entire body. It's deceptively challenging and teaches perseverance.
How to Perform
- Start in Mountain Pose: Stand tall with your feet together or hip-width apart, arms at your sides.
- Bend Your Knees: Inhale and raise your arms overhead, palms facing each other or touching. As you exhale, bend your knees and lower your hips as if sitting into an imaginary chair.
- Shift Your Weight Back: Bring your weight into your heels — you should be able to wiggle your toes. Keep your knees tracking over your ankles.
- Lengthen Your Spine: Keep your chest lifted and your spine long. Don't round your upper back. Draw your tailbone down and engage your core.
- Reach Up: Extend strongly through your arms, keeping your shoulders relaxed and away from your ears. Gaze forward or slightly upward.
- Sink Deeper: With each exhale, see if you can lower your thighs a little closer to parallel with the floor while maintaining good form.
- Hold for 5-10 breaths, feeling the fire building in your legs and core.
- Release: On an inhale, straighten your legs and stand tall. Exhale and lower your arms.
Benefits
- Strengthens the thighs, calves, and ankles
- Tones the core and back muscles
- Stretches the shoulders and chest
- Stimulates the heart and diaphragm
- Builds mental focus and determination
Chair Pose reminds us that growth often happens in discomfort. Embrace the burn!
